Ikorodu (Lagos State) – A septuagenarian, Jeremiah Ikuonile, who stood as surety for a defendant, was on Thursday arraigned in Lagos for failing to produce him before an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
The 70-year-old, whose address was not provided, was arraigned on a one-count charge of failure to produce a defendant for whom he stood as surety.
He, however, pleaded not guilty before Magistrate E. O. Ogunkanmi.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Adegeshin Famuyiwa, told the court that Ikuonile committed the offence on Feb. 5.
Famuyiwa said that Ikuonile stood as surety to one Adebanjo Johnson charged with domestic violence.
She told the court that the surety was unable to provide Johnson when needed in court, in contravention of Section 97 (1) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
The magistrate admitted Ikuonile to bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
He ordered that the sureties’ addresses should be verified, adding that they should have evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The magistrate adjourned the case until March 21, for mention. (NAN)
