ABUJA (Sundiata Post) – Former Director of Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Dennis Amachree, has urged politicians to take rumours of coup seriously and address the hardship in the country.

Few weeks ago, a story that the Presidential Guards Brigade had been put on high alert, following unusual movements and suspicion of a coup plot, had spread like wildfire.

The Nigerian Armed Forces (AFN) had since debunked the rumours.

But Amachree said: “Military coups, although an aberration in these times, usually occur when there is discontent in the society. Rumours of military coups also serve as a warning signal to politicians to ameliorate the unbearable situation of hunger and high cost of living in the land.

“Nigeria is too mature to go the way of Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali because the solution to our present malaise is not by military coups. A concerted effort by all stakeholders will be the way to go, with urgent immediacy.”

Certified Protection Officer (CPO), Mr. Frank Oshanugor, also noted that the situation in the country would obviously give room for people to contemplate a military take-over.

He said: “Though military rule may not be the best for Nigeria in this 21st century, in the absence of a responsible democratic governance, people would gladly welcome the military if only to teach the selfish, greedy and corrupt political leaders some lessons in this endless period of economic hardship.”
