In a breathtaking moment captured by aviation enthusiast Ethan West, a Boeing 777 operated by Air Canada carrying 400 passengers was struck by lightning shortly after takeoff from Vancouver Airport on Sunday.
Miraculously, the plane continued its journey without any casualties, landing safely at London Heathrow. Despite the alarming sight, the aircraft’s modern design, equipped with a carbon composite and thin copper layer, effectively conducted the electricity around it.
The incident prompted an inspection upon arrival, ensuring the flight’s safety. Lightning strikes on planes are not uncommon, occurring on average once or twice a year, according to the National Weather Service.
The rare instances of crashes attributed to lightning highlight the significance of safety measures during flights, particularly in specific weather conditions and altitudes.
