ABUJA (Sundiata Post) – President Bola Tinubu has committed to a national minimum wage higher than the current N60,000.
This is one of the key resolutions the Federal Government of Nigeria and Organised Labour have reached following a meeting held in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation today.
The meeting was convened to address the ongoing nationwide strike action called by Labour to push for a higher national minimum wage.
The resolutions were signed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, on behalf of the Federal Government. The Organised Labour was represented by the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, and the President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Festus Osifo.
National Minimum Wage Commitment: “The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has committed to a national minimum wage higher than the current N60,000.
Tripartite Committee Meetings: The Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage will meet daily for the next week to arrive at an agreeable national minimum wage.
Labour’s Commitment: Labour has agreed to convene a meeting of its organs immediately to consider the President’s commitment to a higher national minimum wage.
No Victimisation: No worker will be victimized as a result of the industrial action.
SIGNED RESOLUTIONS
With these resolutions, the nationwide strike action called by Labour is expected to be suspended pending the outcome of the Tripartite Committee’s deliberations.
