Lagos – A 56-year-old trader, Idayat Jimoh, was on Friday brought before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly threatening to kill her colleague for selling a market space.
Jimoh, whose address was not provided, is facing charges of threat to life and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace, to which she pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Insp. Ben Ekundayo, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on June 12 at No. 26, Nnamdi Azikwe St., Emma Plaza, Lagos Island.
Ekundayo said that the defendant threatened to kill another trader, Sunday Nwakwo, for selling a space in Oluwole market.
“The defendant was seen carrying a handwritten obituary of the complainant with his nickname written on it.
“She wrote “Gone so soon Sunny China” on a big cardboard and was carrying it around the market,” Ekundayo said.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 56,168, and 230 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 168 prescribes three years’ imprisonment for breach of peace, while Section 230 stipulates seven years’ imprisonment for threat to kill.
The magistrate, Mrs A. M. Olumide-Fusika, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.
She ordered that one of the sureties must be a relative of the defendant and the other surety must be a civil servant.
The case was adjourned until July 17 for mention.
