Abuja – Mrs Caroline Oseghale, the Director, Professional Development UNESCO Center for Global Education, Manchester, UK on Tuesday called for the proper training of teachers on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) application.
Oseghale made this call in Abuja on Tuesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
She said that teachers should be trained on ICT application in order to impact the knowledge to the students.
“So teachers should be trained on application of ICT not just having the computers and they also should be used appropriately the way they should.
“If I visit 10 schools maybe only one school is using ICT effectively and not up to international standard, some will just cover the computers there.
“When you ask the schools if they have ICT lab they will answer yes we have, but the application is not there,’’ she said.
Oseghale said that a lot could be done with ICT in terms of learning and teaching in schools.
“In those days, when some things are taught in school, we didn’t even know what it is ICT but we can Google so many things now.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”70560″]
“For example, you are teaching reproduction in school with ICT you should be able to show a proper reproductive process of human and animals in a way that the students will understand it is very important.
“In advanced countries, there is what you call white board when children close from school they go home and key into the white board.
“They use it for learning and they can communicate with their teachers and if there is anything they don’t understand they ask their teachers but such a thing is not yet in Nigeria.
Oseghale said that the centre and Independent Pan Africa Youth Parliament (IPAYP) were responding to the national education development in Nigeria.
She said that centre and IPAYP were committed to contributing to UN-UNESCO Sustainable Development Goal-4 and 2030 Agenda in ensuring quality education to rural cities and communities. (NAN)
