ABUJA (Sundiata Post) The present INEC is one which should get every Nigerian worried. It looks every inch like
Ovie-Whiskey’s 1983 FEDECO and the then ruling NPN.
I will explain why.
Between 1979 and 1983, going by figures released by the then FEDECO, Nigeria’s voting population had increased by almost a HUNDRED PERCENT. But the increase only took place in NPN strongholds. Check these out:
* Sokoto State had 3.7m in 1979 but by 1983, it had increased to 5.1m. (38.4% increase)
* Kano State had an increase of 49% to almost 6m voters.
* Kaduna had 98.2% increase to about 4m voters.
* Rivers had an increase of 115%.
* Benue State had 128.6% increase.
But you may wish to know these also:
* Lagos State recorded only 23.9% in voting population.
* Ogun State had 15.6%.
* Plateau State recorded 3.7% increase in voting population.
In other words, it was only in NPN strongholds that voting population increased. It is this reason that the Get-your-PVC campaign must go beyond sloganeering and pay special attention to NEW REGISTRATIONS and their PATTERNS.
In 1979, the Presidential Election came last. But in 1983, it came first and was held on Saturday August 6, 1983. From taking just 5,668,857 votes which represented 33.7% of the total votes cast, Shagari and his NPN got 12,081,471 which was 47.5% of total voter cast despite being one of the most unpopular governments in history as at then.
It might interest you to know that all the other five parties COMBINED got 13,348,626 votes representing 52.5% of total votes cast. NPN alone got almost half total votes cast!
The ruling APC seems to be dusting up the NPN template of 1983. In that year, FEDECO imported 150,000 ballot boxes, the NPN ruling party imported additional 50,000. Today, the party is almost speaking on behalf of INEC on election sequence. Just like in 1983!
And with INEC doing a cover-up on the underage voting scandal in Kano (shamelessly telling us it was from Kenya), 2019 is already taking shape.
We should be worried.
