Abuja – Nigeria’s Patience George on Tuesday failed to make the final of the women’s 400 metres event at the 15th IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China.

George had on Monday qualified for the semi-finals, when two other compatriots failed to advance, but a personal best on Tuesday was not enough for a place in Thursday’s final.

The quarter-mile could only equal her season best 50.76 seconds for fourth place in heat two, a result that was not good enough for even the fastest loser spot.

It was a bit cruel on her, in terms of the heat she got, since Jamaica’s Christine Day who ran 50.82 qualified after placing second in heat 1.

Nigeria’s Tega Odele also failed to go beyond the heats in the men’s 200m, after placing sixth in heat 2.

Running in lane 2, Odele whose season and personal best was 20.47 could only muster 20.49 to drop out of the competition at his first attempt.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Athletics World Championships which is holding at Beijing’s National Stadium began on Saturday and will end on Sunday.(NAN)
