LAGOS – Alex James, a referee with the Nigeria Wushu KungFu Federation (NWKF), on Thursday advised the body to give priority to refresher courses as a way of further improving officiating standard.
James told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that regular training and re-training of technical officials would bring them up-to-date with current officiating requirements.
He said that it was only through refresher seminars that referees could acquire the necessary competency to officiate fairly at tournaments.
According to him, it is fundamental to ensure that only versatile resource persons are allowed to take charge of such refresher courses which must be a comprehensive package.
“ Both athletes and spectators expect free and fair officiating, but in achieving this objective, we must make sure that the referees are acquainted with latest officiating rules. The referee said it was also important for the NWKF to invite seasoned referees to officiate in competitions and must be asked to present their certificates for verification.
“ The idea is to avoid any acclaimed referee in competitions in as much as the federations are expected to have their records of qualified referees, they must be proactive,’’ he said.
James said that at least a day should be set aside to rejuvenate officials on what to apply during the competition, adding that their decisions should not be doubted. (NAN)
