SOKOTO – The Sokoto State Zakkat and Endowment Committee on Wednesday said it disbursed N105.3 million to the needy in the last seven months.
The Chairman of the committee, Alhaji Lawal Maidoki, said this at the take-off of the sensitisation programme on the need for the rich to pay Zakkat (alm) in Sokoto.
Maidoki said the committee had distributed 1, 844 bags of grains and 14,307 bundles of millet and guinea corn during the period.
He said 240 sheep, 42 goats, 42 cows and two camels were also distributed to the needy
He said that the committee had commenced state-wide enlightenment on the payment of Zakkat. [eap_ad_1] The Chairman urged officials of the committee to be faithful and have the fear of God in conducting their duties.
He also called on people to partner with the committee to ensure the success of the scheme.
In his speech, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, urged Muslims to pay zakkat to the needy in accordance to the teachings of Islam.
“Giving of Zakkat according to the teachings of Islam will surely purify our wealth and eradicate poverty in the society,” Abubakar, represented by Galadiman Garin-Sokoto, said.
The State Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Alhaji Tukur Alkali, also urged the wealthy to support government to improve the welfare of the masses. (NAN)
