Lagos – Two tailors charged with attempting to rob a lady have been remanded on the orders of an Ajegunle Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the defendants, Tunde Raphael, 24 and Ikenna George, 27, are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and attempted robbery.
They, however, pleaded not guilty.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Augustine Ejembi, told the court that the duo committed the offences at 11.00p.m. on Tuesday at Mile 2, near Satellite Town, Lagos.
According to Ejembi, the defendants and with two other men at large followed a woman at Mile 2 Bus Stop with the intent to rob her of her handbag.
He alleged that policemen in plainclothes noticed their movement and arrested them before they could execute the robbery.
Ejembi submitted that during interrogation at a police station, the defendants confessed to planning to rob the woman.
“My lord, the first defendant, Raphael, was just discharged of a robbery charge barely two months ago.
“The defendant was discharged as a result of lack of proper prosecution, he was not acquitted.
“The other two other accomplices, however, escaped arrest,” he said.
The alleged offences contravene Sections 411 and 298 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
NAN reports that Section 298 stipulates between 14 years to 20 years’ imprisonment for attempted robbery, while Section 411 prescribes two years’ jail term for conspiracy.
The judge, Mrs S. A. Grillo, ordered that the defendants ahould be kept at the in Kirikiri Prisons, pending from the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecution.
She adjourned the case to Sept. 14 for mention.
