Katsina- Gov. Ibrahim Shema of Katsina state, has appealed to the African Union (AU) to assist Nigeria to conduct free and credible polls devoid of violence in 2015.

Shema made the appeal on Thursday in Katsina while receiving AU Commissioner in charge of Political Affairs, Dr Aisha Abdullahi.

‘’There is the need for AU to reach out to political parties in Nigeria and encourage them to assist in ensuring peaceful elections in 2015.

‘’All political parties should make their members to understand that democracy can only thrive on a rule of law.

“Again, in every election contest, there must be winners and losers; it is either victory or defeat, as the case may be,’’ he said.

He urged Nigerians, irrespective of social, ethnic, religious or political affiliation, to join hands to ensure that the general elections were peaceful.

The governor described Africa as a destination choice for investment and charged AU to intensify efforts in ensuring that the continent’s vast potentials were properly harnessed.

Earlier, the AU commissioner had appealed for collective efforts to ensure that the 2015 elections were free, fair and peaceful.

Abdullahi said that she was in the state on a two-day working visit, and lauded what he described as ‘’modest achievements’’ of the state government in providing good governance.

She disclosed that her department was in charge of ensuring good governance in the continent, saying that the mandate included monitoring of elections in the continent. (NAN)
