The executive bill seeks to amend some out-dated items in the law by inserting in suitable sections and sub-sections the words and definitions ascribed to them.
Ruling after contributions from members, the Speaker, Mr Eugene Odo, said the bill would change obsolete charges that did not reflect the present day economic realities.
Odo, who described the bill as timely and commendable, said it would enhance the survey practice and cope with current modalities.
He referred the bill to the assembly joint committees on works, lands and the judiciary for further legislative scrutiny and report back in three weeks.
Opening debate on the bill, the Leader of the assembly, Mr Sunday Ude-Okoye, said it intended to amend the existing law to stand the test of time.
“This bill will identify who the commissioner is and identify with the legal body of surveyors in the state to propose the powers conveyed on the Surveyor-General.
“It will also substitute the old charges to new rates that will reflect the present day realities as well as the penalties, among other things,’’ he said.
In their contributions, Mr John-Kelvin Ukuta (PDP-Uzouwani) and Mr Paul Ogbe (PDP-Enugu South Urban), supported the bill and encouraged their colleagues to give it urgent hearing and accelerated passage. (NAN)
