LG Autonomy: Gov. Sule signs Nasarawa state’s 2024 LG law

NASARAWA (Sundiata Post) – Gov. Abdullahi Sule has signed the Nasarawa State Local Government Law 2024 recently passed by the State House of Assembly.

The governor while assenting the law today in Government House Lafia, appreciated the Speaker, Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau and members of the State Assembly for passing the bill into law.

Sule also commended other stakeholders for their positive input in ensuring the new Local Government Law comes into effect.

The governor said the signing of the law marks a significant milestone towards effective and efficient operations at the third tier of government.

To this effect, the Governor confirmed the abolishment of the local government joint account system as a measure towards promoting accountability and transparency by the Supreme Court Judgement granting financial autonomy to local government areas in the country.

The governor explained that the law also provides for the establishment of Area Administrative Councils to be appointed by the State Governor and subject to screening by the State Assembly and it would be funded by the State government.

He further said that all is set for the establishment of the Nasarawa State Economic Council.

On his part, the Speaker of the State Assembly, Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau said the bill was passed into law on Oct.31, 2024.

Speaker Jatau said the bill went through the requisite procedures of the state assembly and was done in accordance with the provisions of the Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy.

Earlier, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Labaran Magaji explained that the law went through rigorous processes that ensure inclusivity and was found suitable for assent by Governor Abdullahi Sule, having underscored the provisions of the judgement of the Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy.
