Umuahia – Abia Government has trained about 300 children from various primary and secondary schools in the state on information and communication technology (ICT), the Chief Librarian of Abia e-Library has said.
The Chief Librarian, Miss Pearl Solomon, stated this on Tuesday in Umuahia at the end of a computer training programme.
Solomon said the training which lasted for a month was given to the trainees free, in order to encourage youths to develop their computer skills.
“It will interest you to know that these children were selected to be trained to become computer literate.
“We have started a process and we are determined to ensure that every Abia child is ICT compliant. I urge parents to make their children available for subsequent computer trainings,” she said.
Prof. Mkpa Mkpa, a former Secretary to Abia State Government, who spoke, urged the participants to utilise what they were taught to impact positively on the society.
Mkpa explained that computer was like a “double-edged sword” which had the capability to make or mar an individual, and urged the participants to utilise it productively.
In a remark, Mr Chinazo Nwosu, the chairman of the occasion, advised parents to encourage their children to love ICT and make it their passion because their future career was tied to it.
“It is always better to capture them young and begin to guide them, because at this stage their mind is so fertile to plant the seed of greatness,” Nwosu said.
One of the participants, Mr Michael Enyidike, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that he would utilise the knowledge he had acquired during the training.
He advised other children in Abia to take advantage of the opportunity to acquire computer skills.(NAN)
