Abuja – Evelyn Fabunmi, Secretary of the Nigeria Wushu Kung-fu Federation, on Wednesday said the second phase of the 2016 National Wushu Kung-fu Open Championship would hold in Abuja in June.
“The event is divided into two parts. The first three days is coaching course for coaches and the remaining four days will be the competition proper.
“We have held the first phase of the event in the first week of March in Lagos, and we are hopeful that the second phase will be more glamorous,’’ Fabunmi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
She said the event, which would be the federation’s second major programme in the year, would hold at the Abuja National Stadium.
“We hope to have more of such events within the year,’’ Fabunmi said.
She said the essence of the event was to select fighters who would represent the country at local and international competitions.
“We also want to use the platform to propagate awareness of the game, and add more athletes to those we have already.
“The federation planned to use the competition to popularise the game from the grassroots, so that it will be known to all Nigerians, just like other sports,’’ the federation official said.
Fabunmi said she was expecting a positive response for sponsorship from the private sector and non-governmental organisations.(NAN)
