Ibadan – Prof. Taoheed Adedoja, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council, Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa, has called for a review of the country’s education policy.
Adedoja, a former minister , told newsmen in Ibadan on Wednesday that the country’s education policy had not been reviewed since 1977.
“ The national educational policy of Nigeria since 1977 has not been reviewed up till today.
“The National Policy on Education as far as it concerns tertiary education, secondary education, primary education, generally, should be reviewed.
“ Nigeria’s vision for education, Nigeria’s mission for education, what we consider as national objective of education in Nigeria has never been reviewed,’’ he said.
He said that Nigeria was developing rapidly and many more people were desirous of access to university education.
Adedoja said that Nigeria with a population of a little above 180 million has 40 federal universities, 39 state universities and no fewer than 50 private universities.
He said these institutions when combined was inadequate to cope with the number of Nigerian youths seeking access to university education when compared with the United State often seen as a model for development.
“Up till now, there is no regulatory body for secondary education unlike others which have various bodies regulating them,’’ he said.

“Presently, the university, which was established in 2011, has five faculties, namely Arts, Social Sciences, Management, Agriculture and Languages, and a population of 1,200.
“We will partner states and make our university a unity-based institution in the country,’’ he said.
He, however, called for synergy between government and the private sector to enhance education standards in the country. (NAN)
