Abuja – The Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) has advised residents of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to make proper use of waste disposal facilities available to them to promote good health.
The Assistant Head, Public Relations Office of the board, Mr Samuel Musa, gave the advice in Abuja on Tuesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Musa said that the board had discovered that residents were not making good use of roll bins provided in their areas to keep the environment clean.
“The roll bins are located in more communal areas where we have markets, schools, bus stops and large populations.
“We have such locations like Nyanya, Karu, and Jikwoyi roads and we go round to service them.
“They are called roll-roll bins because they can be rolled down and rolled up.
“When you roll the bin down, it will be empty and we expect the residents within to dump their waste inside, then we will come to take it to appropriate dumpsite. “
Musa expressed regrets that residents were not putting waste inside the bins as expected.
“They drop the waste outside the bins and when it rains, the waste will be taken away by rain water to block the road and that can cause accidents.
“The residents should cooperate with us.
“Put your waste inside the bins, it will save the cleaning contractor’s time when they come to clear the bins and will also save lives.
“There are people who do not make use of waste facilities. Unfortunately, many people do not even consider the consequences of their actions, “ he said.
Musa noted that solid waste could constitute environmental hazard to humans and animals in the locality.
“Using waste bins is not even quite enough but getting waste in the right bin is more important.
“Anybody caught dumping waste outside waste bins must not go free, I believe that will help our environment to look clean and healthy, “ he said.
Musa said that the board was committed to ensuring that the FCT generally was in a good sanitary condition. (NAN)
