Abuja – The Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), Mr Ahmed Idris, has called on members of the Charted Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) to come up with more innovative and implementable ways of improving on the tax regime in Nigeria.
This is contained in a statement by Mrs Kenechukwu Offie, Deputy Director, Press, Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation on Wednesday in Abuja.
It said that Idris made the call when he received the Council members of the Institute led by its president, Dr Olateju Somorin.
According to the statement, the improvement on taxation would enable the government actualize its programmes.
Idris noted that taxation remained one of the most viable options of shoring up revenue as the nation grapples with the challenges posed by the drop in global oil price.
He said that the reduction in oil revenue had resulted in the government revenue dropping to about 40 per cent.
He stressed on the need for the institute to collaborate with government in its fight against corruption.
The AGF said the institute could come up with strategies on how to effectively block the leakages that exist in the tax system to ensure that monies collected do not end up in pockets of individuals.
He assured the institute of his office’s support in carrying out its activities and that it would also help develop the capacity of staff who are members of the institute to enable them perform optimally.
Earlier, Somorin, the president of the council, told the AGF that members had come to congratulate him on his appointment as the 12th Accountant-General of the Federation.
She said that the institute was proud to associate with the strides already made by the AGF in the short period he had been in office and to thank him for his support to the organization. (NAN)
