Lafia – Gov. Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State on Thursday inaugurated a 17-man committee to investigate alleged maladministration, fraud and corruption in three state-owned tertiary institutions.
The affected schools are College of Education, Akwanga, College of Agriculture, Lafia and Nasarawa State Polytechnic, Lafia.
Al-Makura, while inaugurating the committee, said that government would not tolerate the mismanagement of limited resources, and described some of the reports from the institutions as “embarrassing”.
“The reports we hear from the schools are embarrassing and must be checked. We want to re-position the schools to meet our target of ensuring quality education that will drive the other sectors of life,” he said.
He decried the flagrant abuse of due process by the schools’ administrators, describing the trend as “disheartening”.
Al-Makura directed the committee to examine and appraise the general administration of the institutions and the roles of their governing councils, managements and the academic boards.
“The committee will also determine the sources of funds of the the institutions, particularly internally generated revenue and and other interventions, including TET-Fund.
“Other areas to be checked include financial management, tax administration, development levy, contracts and the remittance of deductions from them, as well as the implementation of financial regulations and other extant rules, from 2014,” he said.
Mr Thomas Ogiri, chairman of the committee investigating the College of Agriculture, Lafia, who responded on behalf of his colleagues, promised that the assignment would be carried out without fear or favour. (NAN)
