Awka – The Nomalisation Committee of the Anambra Football Association (ASFA) has described as untrue allegations that it intends to illegally extend its tenure.
The Chairman of the committee, Iloegbune Okoye, denied the allegation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Monday.
According to him, the committee is prepared to conduct elections and hand over to a newly elected executive members to run the affairs of ASFA.
He said that a court injunction had stopped the conduct of the election, which was scheduled to begin on July 25 with the Local Government Football Councils election.
“Don’t be carried away by the rumours making the rounds; a lot of text messages are going round; people are insinuating.
“I want to tell you that this committee is poised to conduct election and hand over.
“The fortunate thing is that most of the members of the committee are litigation lawyers, who are very busy in their respective chambers; we see this as a call to serve the nation in an ad hoc manner.
“We do not intend to exceed the time frame within which this election will be conducted and any person who thinks that the committee members intend to extend or stay in the office is not thinking the right thing.
“We do not intend to stay a day longer than we need to, to conduct the election.“
Okoye said he was happy that the committee was able to execute a larger part of its mandate, including the formulation of a working statute, the conclusion of the FA Cup, and the restoration of peace in ASFA.
NAN reports that the committee was inaugurated on April 10 to work for three months and was later directed by the Nigerian Football Association on July 21 to conclude the ASFA elections within two weeks. (NAN)
