Lagos – The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Tuesday charged Shittu Ahmed, before a Federal High Court, Lagos, for allegedly peddling 2.9g of cocaine and 1.6kg of cannabis.
The defendant, a 37-year-old artisan, is charged on one count of drug trafficking in the charge marked FHC/L/73C/20.
The Prosecutor, Mr Jeremiah Aernan, alleged that the defendant committed the offences on Jan. 18.
Aernan alleged that the defendant was arrested at the Ikate-Lekki area of Lagos, over unlawful possession of 2.9g of cocaine as well as 1.6kg of hemp.
According to prosecution, both substances are categorised as banned narcotics similar to heroine and other restricted hard drugs, all listed as prohibited in the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) schedule.
The offence of drug trafficking contravenes the provisions of Sections 11(c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation 2004.
The Act specifies a penalty of life imprisonment if convicted of the offence.
No date has been fixed for arraignment of the defendant.
