ABUJA – Mr Miguelangel Vecchia, the Head of Mission, Embassy of Venezuela in Nigeria, has advised Nigerians to be united in fighting the challenge of insecurity facing the country.
He gave the advice on Friday in Abuja at a ceremony organised by the embassy to mark Venezuela’s independence and honour Afro-Venezuelan heroes and heroines who fought against slavery.
He said the government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela recognised and paid solidarity to the Nigerian government and its citizens “at this moment of insecurity facing the country.
“All Nigerians need to stay together to resolve the terrorist problem confronting the country, especially in the North-East.’’
Vecchia said the Afro-Venezuelan Day was organised to celebrate heroes and heroines who fought aganst slavery in Venezuela.
He said that Venezuela had been celebrating the Afro-Venezuelan Day since 2005.
The celebration commenced in 2005 when the country’s National Assembly made a decree to commemorate the revolt of Jose Leonardo Chirinos against the dominant indigenous population who took Africans as slaves.
The event featured screening of film and photo exhibition of African leaders and people who contributed in the fight to free the African continent.
Some of the people whose art photographs were displayed at the event included Jose Leonardo, who rebelled against the Spanish Empire in Venezuela.
Also on display were the art photographs of Mrs Olufunmilayo Ransom-Kuti of Nigeria, Dr Nelson Mandele of South Africa, Gamal Nassar of Egypt, Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya and Yaa Asantewaa of Ghana, among others. (NAN)
