LAGOS – Ibrahim Showunmi, an athletics coach with the Lagos State Athletics Association, on Tuesday applauded the performance of athletes that represented the country at the just concluded Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Showunmi told the News Agency Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that he was impressed with the achievement of the country’s representatives, in spite of what he called “the shoddy preparation of the athletes for the games“.
Nigeria finished 8th on the medals table of the games having won 11 gold, 11 silver, and 14 bronze medals. [eap_ad_1] “All the people that went for the Commonwealth Games performed well; I really praise them because I did not believe they will do well, but I know that they put in extra effort.
“It was not the camping that enabled them to do so well. I wish they went to camp early enough; if they had, Nigeria would have won between 15 and 20 gold medals at the games.
“We should try and camp our athletes early enough for upcoming international competitions in order to put smiles on the face of Nigerians during such competitions.“ (NAN)
