Abuja – Former chaplain of the State House, Prof. Yusufu Obaje on Monday in Abuja said that the tragedy that the country is currently facing, is as a result of poor leadership.
Speaking at the Commonwealth lecture, organised by the Commonwealth Society of Nigeria, with the theme “ An inclusive Commonwealth’’, Obaje said that the country’s lack of political ideology needs to be addressed, adding that a country with no political ideology cannot develop.
He explained that political leadership must assist the populace to achieve their dreams and aspiration.
Moreover, Odaje also said that leadership must evolve from the people and must carry the people along in decision making.
He said that leaders should focus on things of common interest and also to seek to address the common good of all.
“Leadership has certain attributes, which ensures that we must be accountable for our action and inaction and leadership should be transparent,’’ he said.
Also speaking, Hon. Umar Faruk, who represented Femi Gbajabiamila, Majority leader , House of Representatives, said the problem was not individualistic but a social one.
He gave a brief history of his political career since 2002, adding that his perseverance made him a current member of the House of Representative.
Earlier the secretary of the Commonwealth Society of Nigeria appealed to the government to sustain the war against insurgency and also focus on rebuilding the economy.
“In changing times, the need for the Commonwealth to act as an inclusive network for mutual support, development and growth of opportunity and rights for all is as great as ever,’’ he said.
Eight awardees were honoured at the occasion including the Chairman of Zenith, Dr Victor Alewoadoji and Hon. Ghajabiamila.
