MAI’ADUA (Katsina) – Gov. Ibrahim Shema of Katsina State, says the state has raised five million tree seedlings for distribution in order to check desert encroachment in the state.
Shema stated this on Thursday in Mai’adua Local Government Area, at a ceremony to mark the 2014 Tree Planting Campaign.
According to him, the state’s Department of Forestry has already commenced distribution of the seedlings to various NGO’s, clubs, farmers, among others.
Shema, represented by his deputy, Alhaji Abdullahi Faskari, said government had established 40 hectares of indigenous tree plantations; 300 hectares of industrial plantations and, 140 hectares of woodlot plantations.
He said that the plantations would assist to prevent desertification, improve soil fertility and reduce the effects of climate change. [eap_ad_1] Shema urged the people to continue to complement government’s efforts by planting trees in their environment and desist from cutting down of trees.
He also urged the local government councils and traditional leaders in the state to continue to assist in preventing indiscriminate felling of trees in their respective areas.
Alhaji Abdulwahab Sani, Special Adviser to the Governor on Forestry, who also spoke said that the state government had provided motorcycles to forest guards in order to facilitate their job.
He announced that government had provided 824 roles of fencing wire for the establishment of private woodlots in the state in order to protect the forest and check desert encroachment.(NAN)
