Lagos – Prof. Fola Lasisi, former Vice- Chancellor, University of Uyo, on Wednesday commended the Federal Government for promoting technical education and entrepreneurship among Nigerian youths.
Lasisi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the programme, if successfully implemented, would improve the economy of the country in years to come.
He said the awareness, commitment and investment in the policy was commendable.
Lasisi, however, said although, entrepreneurship was beIng accepted and embraced among youths, it was still at the developing stage.
He said entrepreneurship was the key to solving the increasing unemployment rate if it could be accepted wholeheartedly by the youths.
The former VC said entrepreneurs had helped in developing many countries of the world and Nigeria must not be left behind.
He said that the impact of the introduction of technical and entrepreneurial education in the nation’s education curriculum would be felt in the years to come, if other necessary steps were taken.
“We cannot assess our performance in technical and entrepreneurial education yet, having been recently introduced in our curriculum.
“Entrepreneurship has not taken root, we are still manoeuvring to see how it is done; it may take 10 years before we can assess the policy.

“The idea that government itself is promoting is a good thing and I commend them.
“But government is still not investing enough money in it.
“Our government is not putting enough money in education per say, if we are going to promote it, let us do it with more resources.
“For entrepreneurship to develop in Nigeria, our government must put some mechanism in place to thrive.
“The number one solution is stable power supply; if we can fix power, every other thing will fall in place.
“We have the market, brilliant ideas and the youths to achieve much and become the best entrepreneurial country in the world if we do it right,’’ he said.
The former VC said the present government must increase funding for education sector to achieve the desired progress.
He said that poor funding below the recommended 26 per cent by UNESCO was responsible for the decay in the sector over the years. (NAN)
