Abuja (Sundiata Post) – Nigerian musician Peter Okoye has spoken out against toxic family dynamics following his testimony against his elder brother, Jude Okoye, in a high-profile money laundering case.
Jude, alongside his record label Northside Music Limited, is being tried by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged involvement in laundering N1.38 billion, $1 million, and £34,537.59.
Peter, who was once part of the famous music duo P-Square, took to his Instagram story on Tuesday to share his thoughts on family, betrayal, and mental health. He revealed that he endured years of silence and pain, stressing the need to put his peace of mind first.
“Don’t let ‘family’ be the reason you’re drowning in silence. I did – for over 20 years plus. And it almost cost me everything,” he wrote.
Reflecting on his personal growth, he added, “But now I know better – love doesn’t manipulate, loyalty doesn’t betray and family does not steal from you. Family that steals and breaks you isn’t family at all.”
Peter didn’t hold back in describing how toxic family situations can take a toll on one’s mental wellbeing. He declared that he’s done tolerating relationships that drain or devalue him.
“Real family doesn’t drain you, shame you, discriminate against you or ignore your pain. My sanity matters. My mental health is a priority. If it costs my mental health, then it’s too expensive,” he stated.
Peter’s remarks come amid ongoing legal proceedings against his brother, adding another layer of drama to the long-standing tensions within the Okoye family.
