Abakaliki – No fewer than 1,700 teachers have been trained in modern teaching techniques by the universal basic education board in Ebonyi, an official has said.
The Chairman of the board, Chief Hyacinth Ikpo, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abakaliki on Wednesday that the teachers were drawn from the junior secondary schools in the 13 local government areas.
“The teachers were drawn from the 13 council areas of the state and the aim is to sharpen their skills in modern teaching techniques and methodology.
“The training is part of our drive to enhance teaching and learning through the sharpening of the capacity of the teachers who are the major instruments in driving qualitative education.
“You know that modern education is entrepreneur-based and we need to train our teachers to be compliant with this,” Ikpo said.
He said the state government was determined to ensure that pupils and students at the basic education level in public schools obtained qualitative and skill-based education.
“Apart from training and retraining our teachers to acquire skills in modern teaching methods, we have also equipped them with knowledge of information and communication technology to remain relevant.
“Also, we have provided conducive environment for proper teaching and learning by renovating dilapidated school buildings and provision of instructional materials to aid service delivery,’’ he said.
The chairman noted that the state government would spare no effort to ensure that standards and quality of education in state were raised and sustained.

He urged parents to imbibe the habit of sending their children to public schools where they would be tutored by trained and qualified teachers.
“Let me use this medium to appeal to parents and guardians to explore the huge learning opportunities that abound in public schools by sending their children and wards to public schools to learn under trained and qualified teachers.
“Our public schools are well equipped with instructional materials and we still run free and compulsory primary and secondary education in the state,” he added. (NAN)
