ABUJA (Sundiata Post) HSBC, The Economist, Forbes, Financial Times–they’re all in agreement about the present administration’s economic management capacity–or lack thereof. Attacking the messenger ain’t gonna cut it. Facts (most of them from the government’s own Bureau of Statistics) do not lie.
It’s funny how the Buhari administration, which profited from, praised, and some would even say was in part helped to power by, these foreign entities” unflattering portrayals of ex-president Jonathan, now seeks to discredit them as imperialist money launderers for Nigerian looters.
Where was this newfound “anti-imperialist,” anti-Western bluster when the administration was sheepishly kow-towing to and courting Western interests? Where was this assertive anti-imperial mindset when President Buhari went to the White House and subserviently absorbed the figurative body blows delivered by Trump?
African leaders become overnight anti-imperialist, anti-Western, Afrocentric warriors when they’re in trouble or are desperate to keep power.
This convenient, if subtle, advancement of anti-imperialist critique is a two-sided weapon that cuts in two directions. It arouses the patriotic fervor of gullible citizens at home and blackmails into silence the regime’s Western critics abroad.
