Lagos – The National President of Constance Shareholders Association of Nigeria, Mallam Shehu Mikaili, has decried low participation of insurance companies in the Lagos International Trade Fair.
Mikail told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, on Tuesday, that insurance companies should have taken advantage of the large number of visitors likely to be at the fair to deepen insurance awareness.
He said sensitisation and awareness should not end with transmitting insurance programmes on televisions, radio stations and in- house seminar or conference.
Mikail also called for constant campaigns on the benefits of insurance to raise people’s interest.
“I am quite aware of all the programmes, which are translated in different languages for easy understanding and penetration.
“But what insurance industry needs in Nigeria is person to person awareness and the trade fair presents opportunity for that. But, unfortunately, it seems missing,’’ he said.
He said participation of insurance companies would have multiplied effects in the industry.
He, however, pleaded with the government to support the massive enlightenment for insurance deepening in Nigeria.
Mikail said that the growth of the sector largely depended on the government since governments are the biggest buyer and spender in the industry.

NAN reports that only Cornerstone Insurance, which is the official insurer of the Fair, and the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation have stands at the event. (NAN)
