Abuja (Sundiata Post) – The Internal Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria, Plateau State branch has said a united Nigeria is the only way out of nepotism, sectionalism and violence free society.
The outgoing Chairperson of FIDA, Plateau State branch, Mrs Mary Izam, stated this at the weekend in Jos, while interacting with our correspondent on the successes achieved while her three years in office lasts.
Izam said Nigerians can only be united if the sentiments of faith, religion and ethnicity can be put aside, adding that her three years in office as FIDA boss sets a good example that people can work together as one to achieve a common goal irrespective of their religious beliefs.
According to Izam: “When I was elected FIDA Chairperson, I and my exco went to both the Church and Mosque for a Thanksgiving. Muslims followed Christians to the Church as well as Christians followed Muslims to the Mosque.
“We became one united family and handled all cases of gender violence against women and children with the same passion and zeal.
“We can do same in the larger society if we come together, because that is the only way we can push the nation forward”, she said.
Izam quoted section 42 of the 1999 constitution that kicked against discrimination of any citizen either by religion, gender or race.
However, she said while in office as FIDA boss, her and her executives were committed to raising the standard of women and children’s rights in Plateau.
“We were committed to the implementation of women empowerment so they can care for their families, particularly the children.
“Our aim was to see all our children reach their full potential. We also worked to ensure that vulnerable groups are protected. Our vision and mission was also to providing channels devoid of obstacles using our professional skills to support our target group,” Izam said.
