Lagos – Folabi Awojobi, a former national hockey player and financier of the ongoing Lagos Hockey Five-A-Side League, has called on stakeholders to make introduce the league nationwide.
Awojobi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos that making the league national would enhance the popularity of the game.
Across the nation if we are all able to do this kind of league, five-a-side league in Lagos, Ibadan, Kaduna, (and) in Kano.
“Before you know it you have a situation where you have 1, 000 players across the nation that are able, willing and fit to participate in tournaments.
“The reality is that this league would cost us less than a million naira to run for six month, there are tournament that spent 5million in one week.
“So, if we are spending 1million naira over a six-month period, it tells you that we are prudent and across the nation I know already that there are people doing a lot of things in small pockets.
“The fire is starting to catch up and it can only get better.’’
NAN reports that the Lagos Five-A-Side League, which began in May holds every third Saturday at the Union Bank Sports complex. (NAN)
