OWERRI – Former Pro-Chancellor of Imo State University, Prof. Chidi Ibe, said on Friday that the upgrade of Alvan Ikoku Collage of Education, Owerri to a university was a welcome development.
Ibe told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Owerri that the Federal Government ought to have upgraded the institution long ago but commended it for the decision.
He said that Imo had a high level of educational sensitivity, adding that the state could still need more universities in the future.
Ibe said the latest decision would help in producing more graduates in the field of education.
He urged the management of the institution to ensure that all the faculties were well equipped for accreditation.
Ibe said there was the need for the Federal Government to embark on periodic inspections to ascertain institutions that were due for upgrade.

In his own reaction, Prof. Ike Idiga of the department of political science at the university commended the National Universities Commission for the decision.
Idiga urged the students of the institution to work hard and be dedicated. (NAN)
