Abuja- Dr Emem Omokaro, the Executive Director of Dave Omokaro Foundation, has urged Federal Government to strengthen family structure to reduce problems facing senior citizens in the society.
Omokaro made the plea in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.
According to her, family is still the first and starting point of contact in taking care of the elderly and it requires financial sustainability for it to function effectively.
Omokaro said that strengthening family structure in terms of income security and sustainable social insurance were key in addressing the problems facing the elderly.
She added that the creation of job opportunities for youths was another way of strengthening the family structure and a measure to achieving sustainable development goal.
She noted that “if family is well grounded in terms of finances, the problems being faced by some elderly persons will be reduced.
“Government should put in place a national framework that will positively affect all sectors in order to strengthen the family structure.
“Family love is also essential in caring for the elderly because the love from their family will help them to live longer,’’ she said.
