BERLIN- The German Air Force plans to deliver relief supplies to flood-ravaged eastern Libya on Thursday.
Two transport planes to take off from the Wunstorf Air Base with supplies including mattresses, tents, blankets, cots and generators, the air force said.
This followed a request for aid by Libya to the European Union, the German government promised rapid help.
Germany’s aid effort was being coordinated by the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) with the help of the military.
The powerful storm which dubbed Daniel hit war-torn Libya on Sunday after earlier lashing Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey.
As a result of the storm, two dams broke in the mountains above the port of Derna, washing away large areas of the city of 100,000 people.
The government that oversees eastern Libya has put the death toll at more than 5,000 people.
The Mayor of Derna has said late Wednesday that up to 20,000 people may have been killed in the city alone. (dpa/NAN)
