Awka – Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra has charged traditional rulers in the South-East geo-political zone to foster unity among the Igbos in order to achieve a common agenda.
Obiano made this call on Thursday when the Council of Traditional Rulers in the zone paid him a courtesy call at the governor’s lodge, Amawbia, near Awka.
He noted that if Igbos were to remain relevant in the scheme of affairs in the country, there was need for the people to unite and speak with one voice.
The governor emphasised that the role of the traditional rulers in this course was crucial since they are the mouth piece of their various communities.
“The need to maintain the culture, norms and tradition of the Igbos which appear to be neglected by the people cannot be over-emphasised.
“You should drive home the message of the preservation of the most cherished customs and norms of the Igbos in your respective enclaves,” Obiano charged the rulers.
Earlier in his remarks, the chairman of the council, Chief Eze Ebelechidi said that the visit was geared towards having a common front in championing the demands and interests of the Igbo people.
Ebelechidi, who commended Obiano on his sterling achievements, added that their visit was to identify with the governor as a political head in Igbo land. (NAN)
