Asaba – The new Commissioner of Police in Delta, Mr Zana Ibrahim, on Monday pledged to consolidate on the achievements of his predecessor in office in crime fighting and control.
Ibrahim spoke at the Police Command headquarters in Asaba while taking over Mr Alkali Usman, who has been redeployed to take charge of the Police Command in the FCT.
“All that is needed is to consolidate on what is on ground to reduce criminal activities in the state.
“Just like my predecessor did, I intend to work with the cooperation of all personnel of the command. I believe that with team work and dedication to duty, we can achieve better results,’’ he said.
Ibrahim, who was redeployed from Yobe to the state, promised to work closely with other security agencies, traditional institutions and the state government in combating criminal activities in the state.
On the recent clash between the police and pro-Biafra agitators, the new CP called for dialogue, rather than confrontation, in ensuring peaceful coexistence among people of the state.
“I have always and will continue to advocate for dialogue in resolving issues of conflict because you can’t quench fire by pouring petrol into the fire,’’ Ibrahim said.
Earlier, Usman said the police in Delta, under his leadership, did its best in fighting crime.
He said that during his 20-month period of leadership, personnel in the command gave their maximum support toward achieving the mandate of the police in the state.
“During my 20 months stewardship in Delta, I enjoyed the cooperation of senior and junior policemen,’’ Usman said.
He said that though crime control in Delta was very difficult in view of the terrain of the state, his men did their best to discharge the police duties to the society
“Crime control is not a monopolistic task. We have never claimed that we know it all. We partnered other sister security agencies to reduce crime.
“I believe the new CP who is taking over from me can do better than I have done because he has the experience,’’ he said. (NAN)
