Owerri – The Commissioner of Police in Imo, Mr Taiwo Lakanu, has described the award of best performing Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) given to Imo as well-deserved.
Receiving the members of the committee in Owerri on Thursday, Lakanu said the recognition of its Chairman, Mr Chima Chukwunyere, as the best performing PCRC chairman in Nigeria was laudable.
He attributed the success story to the hard work and dedication of the members.
Lakanu said he was not surprised that Imo PCRC was awarded as the best performing in the country.
“We are not surprised that you got the award because you have been very active in your role over the years,” he said.
The reception followed the conferment of the award on the committee at a national conference last week in Abuja, which named Imo as the best performing PCRC state with its chairman adjudged the best.
The commissioner urged the members to be more proactive especially now that they had been recognised by the national body .
“I want the PCRC members to see this award as a big challenge to be more effective in helping the police to curb crime,” he said.
Lakanu said the committee was instrumental to most of the success stories recorded in the state, but urged them to continue to supply the police with useful information that would lead to the total eradication of crime.
Reacting, Chukwunyere said they would continue to carry out the campaign of “police is your friend” until the aim was achieved.
He said the committee had initiated some programmes geared toward bridging the gap between police and members of the public.

He said the radio programme on police-public relations introduced and sustained by the committee for the past eight years was also a major factor that contributed to the award.
Chukwunyere also promised to strengthen the partnership with the police to fight crime more effectively. (NAN)
