Jega said this when he paid a courtesy visit on the NYSC Director-General, Brig. Gen. Johnson Olawumi in Abuja.

According to him the commission was working hard to avert the sufferings of participants during future electoral exercises.

A statement signed by Mrs Bosede Aribigbe, NYSC Director of Public Relations said Jega acknowledged the commendable role the NYSC has been playing in the electoral process, in particular and the development of the country in general.

Jega, who was in company of some federal commissioners of the commission, called on government and the entire public to support and encourage the scheme.

The chairman pledged the commission’s commitment to the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between INEC and the scheme as the nation moves towards the 2015 General Elections.

He regretted the loss of lives of corps members during the 2011 post-election violence and condemned the calls from some quarters for scrapping of the scheme as a result of the ugly incident.

Responding, Olawumi said NYSC was adding credibility to national exercises and pledged the scheme’s readiness to educate and sensitise the public on the roles of NYSC in the electoral processes.

He also pledged total commitment and support to the existing MoU between the two organisations. (NAN)
