Abuja (Sundiata Post) – Former President, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has described as untrue the claim from certain quarters that his government paid lips services to the fight against corruption.
He made the clarification while addressing members and delegates of the Peoples’ Democratic Party at Eagle Square on Saturday.
Sundiata Post recalls that the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), had on Saturday held its non-elective congress where it extended the tenure of Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led caretaker committee by four months.
Jonathan said his administration recorded commendable success in the fight against corruption.
While acknowledging that his government may not have plugged all the leaks in the system, as there’s no such example anywhere in the world, he insisted that there are visible evidence to exonerate his commitment towards eradicating the cankerworm of corruption.
He informed that he fought corruption in a sustainable and measurable manner through creation of institutional tools.
Dr Goodluck Jonathan listed such tools as: Bank Verification Number (BVN), the Treasury Single Account (TSA) designed
to block leakages, as well as the Integrated Payroll and Personnel
Information (IPPIS), which eliminated tens of thousands of ghost workers.
According to the former President, “Our approach to fighting corruption may not have plugged all the leaks in the system; in fact, no nation has ever been successful in eradicating the cankerworm of corruption.
“But we went about it in a sustainable and measurable manner, by, among other measures, creating institutional tools like bank verification number (BVN), the treasury single account (TSA) designed to block leakages, as well as the Integrated Payroll and Personnel
Information (IPPIS), which eliminated tens of thousands of ghost workers, during our time.
He used the occasion to recount other achievements of the Peoples’ Democratic Party in such sectors as roads infrastructure, rail services, communications, public financial management and social
services.
Jonathan who reminded that PDP’s records while in power still speak for the party, he urged all members of the party to be proud of themselves.
We should always celebrate the fact that the PDP introduced key
policies that improved governance, enhanced welfare, boosted and
stabilized the economy of our great country, and above all, gave our
people hope.
He therefore called on members of PDP to rededicate themselves to playing by
the rules and to ensure that the PDP is renewed in vigour to deliver on
its divine responsibility to Nigerians.
Jonathan urged members of the party to forget the grievances of the past, and look to the future with confidence and optimism.
The former President who tasked members to promote the ideals of
our great party, announced that the party has been born anew, with
commitment to the best ideals of democracy.
