kirikasamma (Jigawa) – The Kirikasamma Local Government Council of Jigawa State on Saturday said it had distributed five cars to rural communities to enhance transportation of pregnant women to hospitals. The council’s Secretary, Alhaji Adamu Ibrahim, said this while presenting one of the cars to Malinta community in Kirikasamma. Ibrahim said that the vehicles were donated by the state government under its safe motherhood scheme, designed to control infant and maternal mortality rate. He said that the cars were provided to the communities to ensure free transportation of expectant mothers to clinics. Ibrahim said the council would support the communities to ensure effective maintenance and utilisation of the vehicles. “There is significant reduction in infant and maternal mortality rate since inception of the safe motherhood programme.”

The secretary said the council had executed various health and sanitation programmes designed to enhance healthcare delivery at the grassroots.
He urged husbands to allow their wives to attend ante-natal clinics and present their children for immunisation to enhance their health status.
Meanwhile, Alhaji Mahmud Mattafari, the Chairman, Kirikasamma Local Government Council, said his council had expended N270, 000 on transportation of insecticide-treated mosquito nets to the area.
The nets were provided by the National Malaria Control (NMCP) Programme for distribution to households in the area.
