Lagos – A model, Yvonne Edafe, on Tuesday said that Nigeria had yet to harness the potential in modelling.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, Edafe said that modelling had the capacity of raising revenue for the arts industry through a variety of ways.
According to her, many young people who have modelling skills have not been able to exploit the benefits that can accrue to the sector through their utilisation.
“In spite of having many young men and women with so much prospects, they still lack the ability to break into the industry.
“There is a wide range of benefits that modelling can bring into Nigeria but we have not been able to achieve any of that,’’ she said.
Edafe called on the government, corporate organisations and international beauty brands to understudy the industry’s viability so as to sponsor and expand the sector.
“Models on the other will do better if there is credible sponsorship to enhance the expansion of the sector which in turn will create better platforms and employment opportunities.
“Many countries like South Africa, Botswana and Kenya seem to have grown their modelling sector to a level it attracts foreign endorsements.

“Nigeria has a lot to learn from western countries like Italy, France and the U.S. whose modelling industries have grown to a level where it’s a major revenue earner for them,’’ she said.
She urged the government to aid people in the sector by building major modelling outfits across the six geopolitical zones.
“People across different cultures have modelling skills but these skills needs to be enhanced only when there is a major outfit within their locality,’’ she said. (NAN)
