RABAT – Moroccan authorities said on Tuesday in Rabat that they had broken up a cell of jihadist militants, who intended to carry out attacks in the name of the Islamic State extremist group.

Abdelhak Khiam, Director of the Central Office of Judicial Investigations, said 13 suspects were arrested in operations in Casablanca, Tangiers, Marrakesh and elsewhere in the country.
He said the suspects had intended to carry out attacks inside Morocco targeting high-profile figures and security forces.

Khiam said six automatic handguns and 400 rounds of ammunition were recovered.
He confirmed that more than 1,350 Moroccans are currently fighting in the ranks of Islamic State which controls a swathe of territory spanning Iraq and Syria. (dpa/NAN)
