ABUJA – The First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, on Thursday urged progressive groups to continuously work toward building a democratic and political culture in the country.
Mrs Jonathan said this at her investiture as the Grand Patron of the Progressive Friends Foundation (PFF), a prodemocracy and non-governmental organisation in Abuja.
The first lady, who described members of the foundation as foot soldiers for promoting and sustaining democracy, urged them not to relent in their support.
“I urge you again to continue to be the pillar of support that you are. You have to learn from the humility and Godly nature of our dear president.
“His humble beginning and rise to greatness is a lesson to all and an indication of the good things that await Nigerians. “Our democracy has come a long way and I believe we are unanimous in our resolve to ensure that our democracy is deeply rooted as a government of the people by the people and for the people.
“It therefore behoves on us to give our maximum support and encouragement by working toward the survival and sustenance of our democracy,’’ the first lady said.
Earlier, the PFF Director General, Mr Pat Oramah, said the organisation was a platform that was not only nongovernmental but political.
She said that it supports ideas and ideals that would lead to the sustenance, deepening of democracy and democratic ideals in the country.
“The PFF has consistently underscored the importance of peace in the polity as catalytic to the socio-economic and political development of our nation,’’ Oramah said. (NAN) [eap_ad_3]
