Lagos – Music lovers in Lagos on Saturday enjoyed a beautiful evening watching some of Nigeria’s greatest music icons perform on stage at the Oriental Hotel, Lekki.
The event tagged “Space Legend Series “ was organised by event promoters, Uber Space and Motbensonz Solutions and featured King Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey, Onyeka Onwenu and a surprise performance by Orlando Julius.
Nigerian Idol winners, Timi Dakolo, Gloria Ibru, Dede Mabiaku and Terry Akpala were part of the “younger generation “ that performed, while Patrick Doyle compered at the event.
One of the major highlights of the evening was the reunion on stage by “Elegant Stallion, “ Onyeka Onwenu and her “Stage Husband, “ King Sunny Ade, to perform their evergreen hit, “Wait for Me. “
Onwenu used the opportunity to speak on pre-marital sex.
She urged young people to exercise patience and restraint until they were of age or married before they would start having sex.
“The message of our song has remained same over the years, young couples should not mess themselves up or jeopardise their future with sex; they should wait for each other, they should wait for the right time.
“The right time is after marriage, then they can start having children honourably; they should say no to pre-marital sex and unwanted pregnancies, “ she said.
Earlier, Orlando Julius, who was not initially on the bill of the show, had performed with his band and his wife, Latoya Aduke, who set the stage alight with her dancing steps and stage craft.
Julius used the opportunity to announce that they were celebrating their 23rd year as a couple.
Dede Mabiaku, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sidelines of the event, stressed the need for more live music performances in the country.
“See how enjoyable it is watching our veterans take the stage and still being impressive with their music and stage craft.
“There is no room for mimicking or singing to already recorded CDs here and this is how Nigerian music should be.
“We have advanced musically and the younger ones should do well to learn from these veterans and upgrade their art so they can also become evergreen musicians, “ he said.
The show lasted into the early hours of Sunday morning while the audience danced to the various “old school“ songs dished out by the Nigerian senior music citizens. (NAN)
