KEFFI (Nasarawa) – The Nasarawa State University, Keffi has appointed 50 professors in the last seven years, its Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mohammed Mainoma, said in Keffi on Saturday.
Mainoma, in an address at the 5th convocation ceremony where seven sets of graduates received certificates, said that the professors were home-grown from the ranks of the institution’s lecturers.
He said that the institution currently had 83 professors on permanent, contract, sabbatical and visiting appointments.
Mainoma said that the university had produced 76 First Class graduates in the last seven years, but declared, however, that only nine of them were employed as lecturers.
The Vice-Chancellor named Suleiman Omale of Fisheries Department, who graduated with 4.92 CGPA, as the overall best student from the institution since inception.
‘‘There is no policy in the university that gives automatic employment to First Class students; opportunity for employment depends on the need of the institution and the interest of the students.
“But as an institution, we will continue to create an enabling environment for students to excel and those that do well will be rewarded and recognised,” he stressed.
The News of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 30,000 graduates received various certificates during the ceremony, with 21,442 bagging first degrees, while 8,270 others got postgraduates degrees. (NAN)
