LAGOS – The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) on Thursday said that veteran journalist, Dame Oluremi Oyo, who died on Wednesday, left a legacy of excellence, hard work and commitment.
Oyo, the immediate past Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and a former presidential Spokesperson, died in a London hospital at the age of 61.
In a statement signed by its President, Mrs Ify Omowole, NAWOJ urged female journalists to emulate Oyo’s exceptional dedication to duty.
NAWOJ said that Oyo, the first female President of the Nigeria Guild of Editors, was an icon and journalist per excellence.
“Oluremi Oyo set precedence for female journalists.
“Remi, as she always asked to be called, is known for her relentless zeal and love for the journalism profession, which made her to standout among her peers including her male contemporaries at a time when the woman journalist was not recognised.
“All who worked with her can attest to the fact that she was indeed a hardworking journalist and a mother who made everybody’s problem her own. [eap_ad_1] “Oyo’s work in NAN speaks for itself. At a time when the agency was redundant, she revived it.
“ Now NAN prides itself as a news agency of international repute.
“Her demise comes as a shock to the association, and we will continue to mourn her. She will remain immortalised in our hearts,’’ it said.
NAWOJ prayed for the repose of Oyo’s soul and the fortitude for her family, NAN and the entire Nigerian media to bear the loss. (NAN)
