Abuja – The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has appealed to organisations to comply with environmental laws to ensure environmental standard and sustainability.
The Director-General of the agency, Dr Lawrence Anukam, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) on Friday in Abuja.
Anukam said NESREA would seal any organisation that violated its laws and principles.
“There is a due process in the execution of NESREA’s mandate and we do not want to stifle the economic development of any organisation.
“The agency follows the due process. We give organisations the opportunity of first compliance, second compliance and third compliance before we seal them.
“We only seal as a last resort. So, our plea to regulated companies is to comply with stipulated rules.
“Do not let it come to the point where we are forced to seal your organisation before you do the right thing.
“The regulated firms should simply follow the rules and if they do not comply after a series of warnings, NESREA will have no choice than to seal them.
“We all know that nobody is above the law, irrespective of your position,’’ he said.
The director-general said that NESREA would continue to appeal to organisations to adhere strictly to environmental laws to ensure environmental standard and sustainability.
He said that the essence of complying with the laws and principles was not only to ensure environmental standard and sustainability but to also promote environmental health in the country.
Anukam said that the agency had concluded a two-day Stakeholders’ Forum, geared toward protecting and enhancing the quality of Nigeria’s air resources so as to promote public health.
He advised Nigerians to support and promote human and environmental health.
