Abuja – Forum for Good Leadership and Probity (FOGLAP), a United Kingdom-based Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), has said that procuring modern equipment and prioritising security was critical to addressing insecurity in the country.
In a statement on Monday in Abuja, by its spokesman, Mr Adeola Jegede, the group condemned the killings, kidnappings and other social vices in parts of the country over the years.
According to it, the killings are becoming a menace that seems to have defiled all solutions offered by state security outfits.
“It was appalling to see on Sunday in Plateau, how defenceless Nigerians, especially children and women, were brutally murdered in cold blood by criminals.
“We are concerned what the Nigerian security apparatus is made up in discharging their statutory duties of protecting lives and property.
“The waste of lives and property in Nigeria could have been averted if more police, DSS and other security agencies were deplored to various strategic locations.
“It would have been averted if modern security equipment were procured and if security priority needs of Nigerians had not been misplaced,” it said.
The organisation noted that security details deplored to political events and to guide party stalwarts could have done a great job, preventing the barbaric killings if properly engaged.
It, however, blamed the situation on “dysfunctional security arrangements’’, saying that intelligence gathering and capacity of security outfits were faulty, obsolete or non-existent.
It said that it was only in Nigeria that more security personnel were assigned to politicians and elected office holders than what a community’s police station had.
The group, therefore, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that those involved in the killings in the country were brought to justice and the menace stopped.
It commiserated with families of victims of the killings and the communities, and assured them of support. (NAN)
